We didn’t understand why the ADL 1000, which is supposed to be a clone of the standard LA-2A, didn't work like an LA-2A so we purchased an ADL 1000 and ran tests on our bench to find the answer.   The gain reduction equalization wasn’t at all flat enough for us and the entire amount of reduction was also insufficient so we made a few changes. We started by comparing every component in the box against that of the very successful LA-2A and found several differences that impact performance.  Our ADL1000, as built, turns out to be a good low range compressor but doesn't react much to higher frequency content.  The gain reduction acted kind of like an interesting tone control.  To shorten a long story we made some circuit changes that moved the ADL1000 circuit design closer to the design of the LA-2A both electronically and in performance.   After several iterations of retesting, to our great pleasure, out came that warm smooth transparent even gain reduction everyone wants."Before" and "after" modification oscilloscope photos in this posting compare frequency response with gain reduction applied.   The first sweep curve is from 50 hz to 100k hz with gain reduction added.  You can see how the low end response is heavily attenuated ( the response curve of the ADL 1000 under test is the upper edge of the wave form).  The second oscilloscope photo is of the same ADL 1000 after modification under the same test conditions demonstrating how reduced response is essentially made flat.  The apparent base boost at the bottom of the curve is actually caused by attack time (the response curve is actually much flatter than it looks).  The amount of gain reduction possible is also increased with this modificaton.Our modified compressor was recently compared against an LA 610 (a Universal Audio product that combines a UA 610 mic preamp and the essentials of their new LA-2A reproduction). Only at extreme reductions greater than 20 db did the LA 610 prove to be somewhat more stable than the ADL1000 with this modification. This is just a matter of how different the two boxes behave in squash pancake mode.
